Read Now A Volunteer Reading/Literacy Program for Preschool Children “The problem is that we have concentrated exclusively on teaching children how to read, and we have forgotten to teach them to want to read. There is the key: desire. It is the prime mover, the magic ingredient.” -- Jim Trelease, The New Read-Aloud Handbook
Read Now is a simple program with a big impact. Its mission is to promote a lifelong love of reading in the children of Tulsa by recruiting adult and youth volunteers to read books for one hour a week, one-to-one, with children in area child care centers, in which at least 40% of the children receive assistance. Volunteers typically read with two children from infancy through age six for 30 minutes each. In addition to having their reading mentor, children in the program also receive one book a month to keep. The program was developed to enhance young
children’s literacy skills in the areas of
comprehension, alphabetic principle, phonological awareness, and
concepts about print, which are necessary
cognitive skills for success in school. “Reading research has determined
six skills that children must know before they can learn to read: print
motivation, phonological awareness, vocabulary, narrative skills, print
awareness and letter knowledge” (Baby Guide, Tulsa Kids, March 2007).
Activities offered are reading one-to-one with the children and coordinating
reading circles, with an emphasis on letter and word identification, colors,
numbers, and shapes. These activities focus on the theme to get parents and
children to want to Read Now, Read During the period January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2007, Read Now has recruited more than one thousand nine hundred and thirty-one (1,931) volunteers to read, one-to-one, with more than four thousand one hundred and eight (4,108) children, these volunteers gave a total of twenty eight thousand five hundred and eighteen (28,518) hours during these seven years. During this period, Read Now has given away more than thirty thousand one hundred and fifty-eight (30,158) books and magazines to children and more than eighteen thousand six hundred and fifty (18,650) books and magazines to parents. Read Now is funded by local Tulsa foundations, corporations, and individuals. Volunteers and new or gently used books are needed to expand Read Now across Tulsa. With community support, Tulsa’s children will start school ready to learn and will become avid readers themselves. Do you want to volunteer or to make a donation? Just contact us.
