EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Child care providers must be prepared to respond to a wide variety of emergency situations.  It may be evacuating children and taking them to a safe place or protecting them from outside threats by keeping them safe inside the center.  You can make sure your families know what you would do in the event of an emergency.  An Emergency Response Plan is critical and should be in place at all times.

Emergency Plan - some things to consider

  • Identify the type of hazards that could affect your center (tornado, terrorism,

                 gas leaks, flooding, fire, etc.)

  • Develop a step-by-step plan to respond to each situation.

  • Ensure that all staff have been trained in how to respond to each situation.

  • If evacuation is necessary, know where you will go off the premises (examples include designated shelter sites such as elementary schools, local community centers, churches, etc.)

  • If it is safest to remain in the center, decide where children will be cared for.

  • Know how you will account for each child in an emergency.

  • Have a plan to on how you will notify and communicate with parents and officials.
