The LINK Project

The mission of the LINK Project is to help children, from birth to age six, reach their full developmental potential.  Through screening and assessment, each child’s developmental strengths and areas of concern are identified and those children who might benefit from early intervention services can be identified prior to entering school.

The LINK Project provides free developmental, audiological, speech and social-emotional screening for children ages birth to six in child care centers and homes.  This program was originally introduced into the Tulsa community through Children’s Medical Center in 1990.  In October, 2006, the program was resurrected under the umbrella of the Child Care Resource Center.  The professional team has screened over 750 children since October 1st, 2006.  The LINK Project is directed by Lesley Gudgel, a child development specialist and one of the original members of the LINK Project.

The LINK Project is key to early intervention.  Early identification and treatment is key to reducing cognitive, social, emotional and physical delays in children before they enter school. The Department of Health and Human Services has identified the low birth weight percentage of a community as a good indicator of who might need services.  In Tulsa County that number is 7.1%; however, the public schools, while assessing the needs of children in elementary school, are finding 19% and more children with delays which require intervention.  This level of “acquired” disability can be redirected to early intervention efforts in the community such as SoonerStart and Tulsa Health Department’s Child Guidance services, or other service providers as indicated.  The child care center and family child care home is the natural environment for the assessment of cognitive and social-emotional development as many children spend upward of 50 hours per week in these locations.

Following the screenings, a LINK representative meets with the family to discuss the screening results and provide developmental and educational handouts and resources.  At that time, referrals are made to other agencies if the child needs continued support in any area identified as a need or concern.  Screening and evaluation results are also sent to the child's pediatrician or primary physician.
