“Adverse Childhood Experiences”
Vincent Felitti, MD
Dr. Felitti is Co-Principal Investigator of the “Adverse Childhood Experiences Study” (ACE), ongoing collaborative research between Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control. A graduate of Johns Hopkins Medical School (1962), Dr. Felitti founded the Department of Preventive Medicine for Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, California in 1975, where he served as Chief of Preventive Medicine until March 2001. He is also Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California, San Diego, a Fellow of The American College of Physicians, and founder of the California Institutes of Preventive Medicine. He will discuss the new and enthralling findings from the ACE Study, a look at whether and how childhood experiences affect adult health decades later.

This conference will look at how burnout impacts providers and ways to deal with that impact. The keynote speech and workshops are based on Jeff’s Redleaf Press Book, Finding Your Smile Again: A Child Care Professionals guide to Reducing Stres and Avoiding Burnout.

Presenting: Mary Marden Velasquez, Ph.D.
Dr. Velasquez is Professor, Associate Dean for Research, Director of the Center for Social Work Research, and Director of the Health Behavior Research and Training Institute in the School of Social Work at the University of Texas-Austin. Her area of specialty is the development and implementation of interventions using the Transtheoretical Model of behavior change (Stages of Change) and Motivational Interviewing. Dr. Velasquez’ work includes development of interventions in the areas of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, alcohol and other drug abuse, prenatal health, HIV prevention and smoking cessation. A recent emphasis of her work has been on developing curriculum for medical students and residents to use brief motivational interventions in medical settings. Dr. Velasquez has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters and is currently principal investigator on several NIH or CDC funded studies using these approaches. She is an internationally recognized trainer in both Motivational Interviewing and Stages of Change models.
